Mi’kmaw Parks Vehicle Identifiers

In 2012, the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs signed an interim arrangement with Parks Canada to provide the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia with entry without charge to Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, Cape Breton Highlands National Park and the Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site. In 2014, this arrangement was extended to include all National Parks and Historic Sites in Nova Scotia.

The Mi’kmaq in Nova Scotia will be able to enter these parks and National Historic Sites, free of charge. A Vehicle Identifier has been developed to acknowledge the entry without charge and can be picked up at one of the 13 Band Offices in Nova Scotia or at the KMK main office.  The Vehicle Identifier is for easier transactions at the park gates but, a Status Card may also be requested upon entry.

The identifier is available to 13 Mi’kmaw Communities in Nova Scotia and their members, and other Mi’kmaq who are on the General Indian List of Nova Scotia. In addition to the entry without charge program, this arrangement will result in the establishment of advisory committees to plan and manage areas of common interest in these three national treasures in Nova Scotia.

The arrangement was negotiated through the Made-in-Nova Scotia Process which brings together the Government of Canada, the Province of Nova Scotia and the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.
