Assembly Highlights – July 2025

  • KMK’s Audit Report for the 2024-25 fiscal year was presented and approved by the Assembly.
  • An updated Nova Scotia Indigenous Tourism Enterprise Network (NSITEN) resolution was presented, replacing the 2022 version with revisions to planning, partnerships, funding and board representation. The Assembly agreed with the new approach.
  • KMK provided an update on Nova Copper Inc., who is proposing to explore and develop several critical mineral mining projects in Nova Scotia. The Assembly approved signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nova Copper as a written commitment to work together on a Mutual Benefits Agreement.
  • KMK provided an update on current benefits projects and their various stages.
  • AFN Regional Chief shared an update on plans for a Governance Leadership Institute next year. A survey is being distributed to all Chiefs and Councils to gather input, particularly from councilors.
  • A discussion was had on the Mi’kmaq Renewable Energy Strategy (MRES). KMK will be reviewing and updating the 2011 Strategy to align with current priorities. KMK will begin working with the Portfolio Co-Leads to update the Strategy.
  • Representatives from Fundy Ocean Research Centre for Energy (FORCE) provided the Assembly with an update on the Mi’kmaw delegation that visited Orkney, Scotland to view a technology test site at Orbital Marine Technology. Discussion was had on the experience and how similar technology could operate in Nova Scotia.
  • KMK presented on Bill 6, which lifts the moratorium on uranium exploration and hydraulic fracturing, and Bill C-5, which fast-tracks “National Interest” projects by bypassing key federal approvals, including under the Impact Assessment Act. The Assembly discussed how to address the lack of consultation on these issues.
  • KMK provided an update on the call for candidates for the Youth Assembly. Although there were several applicants, not all communities were represented. The Assembly agreed to work with each Chief individually to find a representative for their community. It is hoped that the final list of names will come back to the Assembly at their next meeting.
  • KMK provided an update on the moose population and moose file, including the recent meeting with the Minister, and the upcoming webinar to gather feedback from Mi’kmaw community members.
  • KMK provided an update on the Fisheries file, and discussions were had on the next steps to be taken in the coming months.
