Assembly Announces Appointment of Negotiator

(Mi’kma’ki) – Maw-lukutijik Saqmaq (Assembly) has announced that Janice Maloney, Executive Director for Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuaqn (KMK), has been promoted to the role of Senior Strategic Negotiator for the Made-In-Nova Scotia Process.

Janice Maloney, BA, LL.B, LL.M, KC, has worked as the Executive Director for KMK since 2005 and during that time has been an active member at both the Rights Implementation and Consultation tables.

“Janice is a trusted Mi’kmaw lawyer, who has worked as a member of KMK’s Rights Implementation team for 20 years,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly. “Her knowledge and expertise are invaluable to this work.”

Janice has helped to keep discussions going with Canada and Nova Scotia at the Rights Implementation table since Dr. Viola Robinson retired as Lead Negotiator in 2021. In her newly appointed role as Senior Strategic Negotiator, Janice will continue to lead these discussions, in a different capacity.

“Janice has been actively doing this work for several years, while also managing the day-to-day activities at KMK,” said Chief Leroy Denny, Co-Chair of the Assembly. “Officially moving her into the Senior Strategic Negotiator position will give her the time and space needed to follow her passion of seeing reconciliation advance for the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.”

Before joining KMK, Janice worked for Nova Scotia Legal Aid, in private practice, the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association and the Confederacy of Mainland Mi’kmaq where she helped develop the Mi’kmaw Legal Support Network and Mi’kmaw Will Kits.  Janice is a practicing lawyer, a member of the Nova Scotia Barristers Society (NSBS), a small claims adjudicator, and currently sits on the NSBS’ Credentials and Gender Equity Committees, as well as the Canadian Centre for Professional Legal Education Appeals Committee.  In 2025, she was awarded the King Charles III Coronation Medal.
