Assembly Meeting – May 27, 2021

  • The 2020-2021 KMK audited financial statements were presented and approved by the Assembly.
  • The Mi’kmaq Forestry Initiative discussed the lands they are looking at and will be coming back to the Assembly at a future meeting for approval on the suggested parcels.
  • KMK updated the Assembly on a consultation accommodation agreement for Sherbrooke Lake. The Assembly requested the lands be held in trust by the Mi’kmaq Resource Development Partnership, which represents all 13 communities.
  • KMK spoke on the draft MOU with Atlantic Gold to begin discussions about employment, training, etc. The Consultation Team spoke about the environmental studies currently happening for this project.  The Assembly discussed their environmental concerns with this project and with mining in general.  They requested additional information before any decisions are made on the MOU.
  • KMK provided an update on the Energy Efficiency project. Efficiency Nova Scotia is seeking government funding to continue energy efficiency installs in Mi’kmaw communities until 2026.  Assembly discussed importance of training dollars so that community members could work on install teams and for cleaning heat pumps.
  • A presentation was provided to introduce the Nova Scotia Office of Equity and Anti-Racism.
  • Burchells LLP, Chief Robinson, Chief Potter and Chief Toney spoke about the Kespukwik Livelihood Plan. The Assembly accepted the Kespukuwk interim livelihood lobster plan.
  • Burchells LLP spoke about potential court challenges with DFO policies. The Assembly provided direction to Burchells to look into possible legal options.
  • The Assembly discussed a Mi’kmaw Harvester who was charged with fishing elvers while under a community livelihood plan.
  • KMK provided an update on consultation discussions on Potlotek’s Netukulimk Plan and documents that DFO has brought forward.
  • KMK provided an update on livelihood discussions from the Rights Implementation table.
  • Chief Toney provided an update to the Assembly on his recent meeting with Minister Jordan.
  • KMK presented on the Spruce Budworm working groups.
  • Regional Chief Prosper provided an update from the regional office for the Assembly of First Nations.
