Assembly Meeting – June 24, 2021

  • Chief Wilbert Marshall suggested increasing the number of Chiefs who sit on the Planning and Priorities Committee – which is the committee that determines the agenda items for Assembly meetings. Chief Sidney Peters requested that this be a discussion item at the next Chiefs’ Strategic Planning Session.
  • KMK provided an update on the status of the action items from the May Assembly Meeting.
  • Regional Chief PJ Prosper provided an overview of the status report for the Assembly of First Nations (AFN). The Assembly discussed the various AFN Chief committees and the upcoming AFN Annual General Meeting.  Regional Chief Prosper spoke about the new AFN regional office being opened in Millbrook, with the possibility of a sub-office being opened in Bishops Falls, NL.
  • Nova Scotia Power Inc. (NSPI) introduced their new President and CEO, Peter Gregg, to the Assembly who spoke about working with the Mi’kmaq on various NSPI projects.
  • KMK provided an update on the upcoming Chiefs’ Strategic Planning Session.
  • The Assembly broke to watch the livestream news from Cowessess First Nation on the residential school discovery in their community.
  • Members of the RCMP provided a presentation on the Calls to Action on Justice and on Fisheries Act Discussion was also had on community COVID enforcement.
  • Chief Sidney Peters acknowledged the recent appointment of Twila Gaudet, KMK Director of Consultation, as a Nova Scotia Adjudicator; Houston Barnaby, KMK Governance Researcher, on being called to the Nova Scotia Bar; welcomed new staff to KMK and acknowledged Bruce Wildsmith, Q.C, in his retirement.
  • KMK provided responses to the questions asked by the Assembly at their May meeting about energy efficiency installs in the Mi’kmaw communities.
  • KMK provided an update to the Assembly on the environmental concerns that are being examined, through Consultation, on the Goldboro LNG project. Work is ongoing with our Archaeology Department, the MCG and UINR on potential impacts to fish, fish habitat, wetlands, mainland moose, and other concerns.  Consultation is still ongoing on regulatory authorizations.  Chief Andrea Paul asked about the Environmental Assessment and the Mi’kmaw Ecological Knowledge Study processes. Discussion was also had about the upcoming Women’s Forum on June 30th to discuss the work camp.  Much discussion was had by the Assembly on safety concerns.
  • Regional Chief Prosper and District Chief Alex Christmas, spoke about Bruce Wildsmith and recognized him for all he’s done for the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia.
