Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs Offer Condolences to the Family of Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy

The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs offer condolences today to the family and friends of Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy and to the entire Mi’kmaw Nation.

“Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy was deeply committed to the Mi’kmaq people and spent his life guiding, teaching and inspiring those around him,” said Chief Terrance Paul, Co-Chair of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs. “We offer condolences and express our deepest sympathy to his family, fellow Grand Council members and
many friends.”

Grand Chief Ben Sylliboy was the leader and a respected member of the Mi’kmaq Sante’ Mawi’omi (Grand Council) – the traditional form of government for the Mi’kmaq Nation that brings together the seven traditional districts of Mi’kma’ki.

“Grand Chief Sylliboy’s dedication will always be remembered and this is a loss that will be felt completely around Atlantic Canada,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs. “Our hearts are heavy and we all feel a deep sadness as we mourn and say farewell to such an incredible person.”

The Kwilmu’kw Maw- klusuaqn Negotiation Office/Mi’kmaq Rights Initiative works on behalf of the
Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq Chiefs in the negotiations and consultations between the Mi’kmaq of
Nova Scotia, the Province of Nova Scotia and the Government of Canada. KMKNO was developed by the
Mi’kmaq, for the Mi’kmaq. The purpose of these negotiations and consultations is to implement our
Aboriginal and treaty rights from the treaties signed by our ancestors in the 1700’s.
