KMK team members were joined by Boreas Heritage Consultants to provide a presentation and update on archaeology work conducted at Pasi’tuek (Gaspereau Lake). The Assembly had extensive discussions on the significance of this area, the current archaeology research and discussed the work that has been done to date. The Assembly directed KMK to continue to work on this site with Boreas and to look at having the area designated as a Mi’kmaw Protected and Conserved Area. The Assembly also directed KMK to develop a system for Mi’kmaw archaeological governance, on their behalf.
KMK and Acadia First Nation provided an update on at the Nova Scotia Power project currently underway at Tusket and their archaeological concerns at this project site.
Representatives of the Halifax Regional Municipality presented to the Assembly on their plans for community engagement on the matter of renaming Cornwallis Street in Halifax.
KMK Governance Team spoke to the Assembly about forming Youth and Elder Advisory Committees. The Assembly directed KMK to work with each Chief and Council to find representatives for these committees.
Chief Gerald Toney and KMK Fish Team provided an update on Fisheries work and discussions. The Assembly requested that any documents drafted be provided to their community legal representatives for a full review and that this discussion come back, after those legal reviews are conducted.
Burchells LLP provided an update on the fisheries court cases that are currently before the courts.
KMK Benefits Officer and Burchells LLP provided an update on the benefits file and the various projects, including the existing wind and energy projects. Discussion was had on environmental concerns with various projects and how the Assembly can work together to address those concerns.
Chief Annie Bernard-Daisley spoke about birth alerts and concerns with drug addictions in the Mi’kmaw communities. She requested that addictions and drugs be a topic for discussion at a future Nationhood conference.
