Assembly Meeting – October 28, 2021

  • Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuaqn (KMK) provided an update on the Wula Na Kinu Mi’kmaw Enrollment Process. The process was launched in 2019 and Harvester Identification cards have now lapsed. Grand Chief spoke about the districts of Mi’kma’ki and the Grand Council. The Assembly accepted an extension of the Harvester Identification cards for one year, as well as accepted the reoffering of Enrollment Committee members to continue to serve.  One committee member, Dr. Sherry Pictou, stepped down because of her new role as District Chief.
  • KMK Lands and Consultation Teams discussed the Seawall Hiking Trail. The Assembly asked for some specific information and requested that this then be brought back to a future meeting for another discussion.
  • KMK presented on a Point-Of-Sale (POS) ad/promotional campaign for Christmas. The workplan for POS outreach work with retailers and posters for social media were both approved. Campaign will begin to run in November.
  • Discussion was had on Livelihood Fisheries Plan in communities and District plans and approaches. Direction was given to KMK to reply to DFO’s mandate letter on behalf of their member communities.
  • Because of time restraints, discussion on Avon River Independent Engineering Assessment was moved to the next meeting.
  • Three Minds Collaboration requested time to do a presentation on MMIWG Engagement. The Assembly requested that a new date be set to hear about this project as their time was limited today.
  • The KMK Archeology Department provided a presentation on archeology concerns on Oak Island.
  • KMK Forestry Department spoke on Hemlock Woolly Adelgid insect. They will be working to coordinate a site visit for the Assembly to see first-hand the impacts of the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid.
  • November 5, 2021 – the Assembly received the presentation from Three Minds Collaboration on MMIWG Engagement and provided them with an overview of what they heard in the research they conducted. The Assembly requested an evening session to continue to talk about this important work more in-depth.
