Point of Sale Tax Exemption

Point of Sale Tax Exemption

Under s.87 of the Indian Act, First Nations individuals are exempt from sales tax when purchasing goods or services, either on-reserve or delivered to a reserve.  It has been an ongoing concern of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs that there are inconsistencies across Nova Scotia relating to point-of-sale tax relief for Status Indians.

This holiday season, we will be encouraging our community members to shop only at stores that honour their sales tax exemption. As part of this campaign, we have shared a sign for businesses to post in their store window and/or on your websites and social media pages to let community members know you honour their sales tax exemption.

Know of a business that needs a sign and a thank you letter, or a business that needs a friendly reminder who isn’t providing the exemption in-store? Please share it from the links below.
