Assembly Meeting – January 27, 2022

  • James McCarthy, new Human Resources Manager for KMK was introduced to the Assembly.
  • KMK spoke on the Indigenous Justice Strategy. KMK, CMM, MLSN, NSNWA, Wabanki 2-Spirit Alliance and MNFC submitted a joint proposal which included hosting a symposium, engagement sessions for each community and a survey.  The Assembly approved the plans for the strategy.
  • KMK provided an update on the pulp mill transformation and the effluent treatment facility. Pictou Landing First Nation will continue to lead consultation on this file.
  • KMK presented on the Mi’kmaw Authenticity logo development project for cultural tourism. The Assembly was shown portfolio submissions from 10 local Mi’kmaw artists and requested additional time to review the portfolios.
  • A request received from the Canadian Security Intelligence Serves (CSIS) – Atlantic Branch to meet with the Assembly was brought forward. The Assembly requested that they be invited to a future Assembly meeting.
  • Efficiency NS submitted a request to meet with the Assembly. The Chiefs discussed the energy efficiency projects completed in recent years.  The Assembly requested that Efficiency NS be invited to a future Assembly meeting.
  • KMK’s Benefits Officer spoke about an upcoming planned strategy session with the Chiefs and informed them that the session is being moved from in-person to virtual.
  • KMK presented on Environment and Climate Change Canada co-management of three islands in Nova Scotia – Isle Haute, Country Island and St. Paul Island. KMK’s request to talk to Elders and Knowledge Holders about the cultural connection to these islands was approved by the Assembly.
  • Discussion was had on the Mi’kmaq Forestry Initiative (MFI) Lands presented last summer. The Assembly approved the addition of lands presented in Cape Breton and eastern mainland NS to the MFI land holdings.  KMK will be planning a site visit to these lands for the Assembly in future months.
  • KMK and CMM presented on Wisqoq (Black Ash) Protocol to help with management of this species. The Assembly approved the Protocol.
  • AFN Regional Chief Prosper provided an update to the Assembly. He spoke about upcoming meetings, strategic planning session and the recent child welfare class action lawsuit.
  • The Assembly appointed Chief Sidney Peters as the new Lead Chief of the Justice portfolio.
