Assembly Highlights – May 26, 2022

  • KMK presented on the need to address the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA). The Mi’kmaq Forestry Advisory Committee (KMK, CMM and UINR) has looked at an alternative to spraying insecticides as a means to address the HWA. A targeted stem injection on old growth was suggested as a treatment, ensuring that treatments are not within 5 metres of a watercourse. The Assembly agreed with the approach.
  • CMM presented on the Earth Keepers Network, a collaborative group with representation from UINR, CMM and KMK, and their desire to build an official process for the designation of an Earth Keeper. The Assembly agreed with the official process.
  • UINR and KMK presented the Communications Strategy for the Mi’kmaq Forestry Initiative (MFI). The strategy is to plan how they can promote awareness of the MFI.
  • KMK’s 2021-2022 audit was presented and approved by the Assembly.
  • KMK provided an update on the fund being set up by the Catholic Church to support Indigenous reconciliation projects for residential school survivors. A committee, possibly made up of one representative from each community, will be developed.
  • KMK spoke to the Assembly about a Mi’kmaw sponsor for the Canadian Coast Guard Ship Sponsorship Kopit Hopson 1752. Currently, the vessel is being worked on and the event for the ship has been postponed. The Assembly requested that this be brought back to them in the Fall.
  • KMK presented on the L’nu Authenticity Logo process. Discussion was had about how to enroll people for use of the authenticity logo and on the logo itself. The Assembly provided feedback on the logo design. Information was also provided on tourism programs, specifically for Mi’kmaw, upcoming at three universities and the NSCC.
  • Burchells LLP provided an update on the livelihood fishing litigation. A discussion was had about the claims against Nova Scotia and Canada.
  • KMK discussed issues with Mi’kmaw Archeology on Oak Island and the lack of consultation.
  • An update was provided by KMK on the Avon River and the collaborative seeding project.
  • An update was provided on the Efficiency NS project and their three-year plan.
  • KMK provided an update on Nova Scotia Power projects and some concerns that have recently arisen at one of their sites.
  • Regional Chief Prosper spoke about the AFN AGA, Chief Potter’s submission regarding Citizenship, a policing forum with funding from UNDRIP and the upcoming Vatican visit. Regional Chief Prosper is also working to get a face-to-face meeting between Grand Chief Sylliboy and the Pope.
