Assembly Highlights – July 13, 2022

  • The Assembly discussed concerns about an individual who has been causing issues in some of the Mi’kmaw communities. The Grand Chief provided comments on the situation and the Assembly members sought advice on next steps from one another.
  • Mi’kmaw Kina’matnewey provided an overview upcoming signing event on the affirmation of the Mi’kmaw language on July 17 at Potlotek First Nation and reviewed the document to be signed by the Chiefs. The proclamation of the new Mi’kmaw Language Act will officially recognize Mi’kmaw as the province’s first language.
  • Chief Sidney Peters provided comments on the Assembly of First Nations’ Annual General Meeting that was recently held in Vancouver, BC.
  • The Nova Scotia Nova Scotia Indigenous Tourism Enterprise Network (NSITEN) provided an overview to Assembly of the organization’s projects, goals, and mandate. They requested support from the Assembly to help support and further their work.  The Assembly committed to work on the development of a Mi’kmaw governance mandate to align with NSITEN’s mandate.
  • KMK’s Governance Team provided a presentation on the Assembly’s portfolio system and current portfolio assignments. Questions related to this presentation were tabled until a date is set for a workshop/discussion for the Fall.
  • The Assembly discussed the upcoming Chiefs’ Strategic Planning Session with the AFN Regional Chief.
  • Discussion was had about the Treaty Day 2022 events and planned activities in Halifax.
