Assembly Highlights – September 30, 2022

  • KMK presented the Mi’kmaw Cultural Tourism logo, as voted on by community members via survey. This logo will be used as the official logo and branding trademark for Mi’kmaw artists, crafters and cultural tourism operators in Nova Scotia. The Chiefs discussed the logo, asked for revisions and for the logo to come back to Assembly at a later date.
  • Nova Scotia Indigenous Tourism Enterprise Network (NSITEN) spoke about the Provincial Tourism Strategy. NSITEN was designated by the Assembly as the official cultural tourism organization to support the continued development and sustainability of tourism for the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia. The Assembly also discussed their portfolio leads and having a representative on the Board of Directors for NSITEN.
  • A representative from CMM working on Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas, spoke about the Mary Harper Nature Reserve and their desire to transfer these lands to Wagmatcook through the Assembly’s Sespite’tmnej Kmitkinu Conservancy. Chief Norman Bernard spoke about Wagmatcook’s intended use of the lands for education, conservation, cultural and medicine walking trail, traditional food and medicine harvesting, and other cultural uses. The Assembly approved the transfer.
  • KMK presented the 2022 land acquisition candidates. The Assembly looked at 13 different properties throughout Nova Scotia, that align with the priority areas identified in the Assembly’s Lands Strategy. The Assembly agreed with the three recommended properties and directed KMK to work with the Lead Chief on these lands.
  • Assembly of First Nations (AFN) Regional Chief provided an update from the AFN. Nova Scotia won the bid to host the AFN Annual General Assembly in July 2023. Regional Chief also spoke about the upcoming special Chiefs meeting taking place in December in Ottawa.
  • Chief Carol Potter spoke about the moose population and discussed interest in the aerial surveillance of the population.
  • KMK provided an update to the Assembly on discussions happening with Port Hawkesbury Paper on their work.  An update as also given on the Mi’kmaw Forestry Initiative and how CMM, UNIR, KMK and the Assembly are working together on this.
