Assembly Highlights – March 30, 2023

  • KMK presented the Protect our Culture – An Intellectual Property Guide for Mi’kmaq, a tool to help create awareness of Mi’kmaw intellectual property rights. KMK brought the draft guide to communities in May and November for community discussion. The Assembly agreed for the document to be made public.
  • Discussion was also had on using the term Mi’kmaq or L’nu for Mi’kmawitasik, which will be used to authenticate Mi’kmaw-made products. The Assembly approved the Mi’kmawitasik Guidelines and the revised logo.

  • Chief Annie Bernard-Daisley shared concerns about a Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) campaign promotional video that uses a visual of a red dress. Discussion was had on MMIWG and MADD using this imagery to create awareness for their campaign. The Assembly directed KMK to write a letter to MADD expressing their concerns. They also asked Regional Chief PJ Prosper if the issue could be addressed at the upcoming Assembly of First Nations (AFN) meeting so that it is also brought to national attention.
  • Grand Chief Norman Sylliboy spoke about concerns about the recent deaths of two Mi’kmaw individuals while incarcerated. The Assembly discussed the importance of a justice strategy and passed a motion for a Mi’kmaw-led inquiry into these two deaths to occur. KMK was directed to write a letter to the Department of Justice about the Mi’kmaw-led inquiry.
  • KMK provided information on the upcoming Canadian Archaeological Association that the Assembly is co-hosting in May.
  • Regional Chief PJ Prosper provided an update from AFN. Discussion was had about the upcoming AFN Conference in Ottawa.
  • Chief Annie Bernard-Daisley provided an update on the MMIWG Conference she recently
  • KMK provided a presentation on Marine Protected Areas. The Assembly requested that the presentation be provided to all their Chiefs and Council.
  • Chief Carol Potter spoke about the moose harvest in the Cape Breton Highlands and the use of the airstrip location. Discussion was had on where people stay when participating in a community harvest.
