The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs extends condolences to the family and friends of Mi’kmaw Elder and historian, Dr. Daniel N. Paul, C.M., O.N.S., O.C.
Elder Dr. Paul was best known for dedicating his life to advocating for the history of the Mi’kmaw Nation and the province of Nova Scotia be told. He was a renowned author, having written six books, including the acclaimed We Were Not the Savages.
“Today is a sad day for Mi’kma’ki,” expressed Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly. “Dan was instrumental in changing the way Mi’kmaw history was understood and recognized. His work helped open eyes on how the Mi’kmaq were historically mistreated and the racism our people endured.”
Elder Dr. Daniel Paul was a member of the Task Force on the Commemoration of Edward Cornwallis and the Recognition and Commemoration of Indigenous History, representing the interests of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs and the Mi’kmaq with the Halifax Regional Municipality. He often provided educational sessions on Mi’kmaw history and human rights issues to various groups and was always willing to share his knowledge.
“Dan’s commitment to bettering the lives of the Mi’kmaq was unwavering. He will be missed. We offer our deepest sympathy and say meskayi to Danny’s family and many friends on their tremendous loss,” said Chief Peters.
