Assembly Congratulate and Welcome New AFN National Chief Cindy Woodhouse

Yesterday, in Ottawa, Cindy Woodhouse was elected as the National Chief of the Assembly of First Nations (AFN).  National Chief Woodhouse previously served as the AFN Regional Chief for Manitoba.

Many of the Chiefs from Nova Scotia were in Ottawa to participate in the election process.

“We congratulate National Chief Woodhouse and look forward to seeing where she is able to take the AFN,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair for the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. “She has clearly demonstrated her passion for all Indigenous people across the country and we are optimistic for the leadership she will bring on behalf of the Chiefs of this country.”

Before the election, the position of National Chief was being held in the interim by Regional Chief of New Brunswick, Joanna Bernard.

“We also want to thank and acknowledge Interim National Chief Bernard for her leadership during the past few months.  Having a National Chief from the east coast, if even only for a short period of time, was unique and special for us,” continued Chief Peters.

Members of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs will be returning to Nova Scotia today and look forward to working with their new Regional and National Chiefs.
