The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs extends condolences to the family and friends of their former Senior Mi’kmaw Advisor and trusted Mi’kmaw Elder, Joe B. Marshall.

“We have lost a true advocate and leader,” expressed Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly. “Joe was strong and focused, yet incredibly kind with a soft demeanor. Everyone listened intently when he spoke as we always understood how fortunate we were to be receiving his wisdom and guidance.”

Joe B. Marshall, ONS, OC, was a Senior Mi’kmaw Advisor for Kwilmu’kw Maw-klusuaqn from 2004 until his retirement in 2021 and was instrumental in discussions through the Made-In-Nova Scotia Process. Joe B. was also a founding member of the Union of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaq and assisted with the formation of the Mi’kmaw Ethics Watch.

“He was well known for his dedication and visions of advancing the rights of the Mi’kmaq and had spent much of his life working toward those goals,” continued Chief Peters.  “Joe B. will be missed and we offer our deepest sympathy and condolences to his family and many friends on the tremendous loss.”
