KMK’s Consultation team provided an update about the recently held Inner Bay of Fundy (BoF) symposium. A discussion was had on the designation of the BoF as an Indigenous Protected Conserved Area. This topic will come back for further discussion at a future Assembly meeting.
At the February 4–5 strategic planning session, Chiefs provided direction for the Culture, Heritage, Archaeology, and Tourism (CHAT) Strategic Plan. KMK presented draft text for the renewed CHAT Strategic Plan, noting that significant advancements have occurred since the release of the 2015 Culture, Heritage and Archaeology Strategic Plan. The discussion was tabled until the next Assembly meeting, allowing time for KMK to meet with Sipekne’katik’s consultation lead.
On behalf of the Indigenous Protected Conserved Areas (IPCA) Working Group, Eskasoni Fish and Wildlife presented the Maliaptmnej Wksitqamu logo and brand guide to Assembly. The Assembly approved the logo, with a minor edit to the design.
Chief Terry Paul provided an update on the Nova Port project and requested support from Assembly to continue working toward its ongoing development. The Assembly approved ongoing support. Nova Port will provide progress reports and milestone tracking to communities.
KMK provided an overview to the Assembly on the hydraulic fracturing research under Dalhousie University’s Fracking Agreement and the Subsurface Energy Research & Development (R&D) Investment Program. The program, focused on onshore natural gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing, was commissioned by the Province to better understand the potential of onshore natural gas resources. The Assembly requested that Dalhousie University be invited to attend a future Assembly meeting to provide more information on their program.Top of Form

Members of the Unama’ki Wantoqo’tikewinu’k (Unama’ki Peacekeepers) provided a presentation to the Assembly. Unama’ki Wantoqo’tikewinu’k is a newly established Indigenous-led, non-enforcement community safety and wellbeing initiative created to serve Mi’kmaw communities across Unama’ki, with a long-term vision of expanding services throughout Mi’kma’ki.
KMK provided an update on the Fish Term Sheet, which is intended to support securing a new mandate with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada (DFO). A meeting has been scheduled for Chiefs to review and discuss the proposed term sheet further.
