Assembly Meeting – April 30, 2020

  • Chief Prosper provided an update on the Maw-Kleyu’kik Knijannaq mobile app development. Potential names were discussed for the app and the Chiefs chose Netaway which translates to “I speak”.
  • Chief Andrea Paul provided an update on the incorporation of the Mi’kmaq Health Authority. The Chiefs discussed the structure of the authority and the need for support for the agency, as well as community engagement.
  • Chief Googoo spoke on the 2020 Moose Survey and provided an update to the Assembly on the results. An update was also provided by KMKNO on the conservation efforts of the Mi’kmaq in the moose harvest last year.  Overall, Mi’kmaq harvesters were very good about dropping of samples at collection points to help conservation efforts.  Discussion was had on the 2020 conservation plans and the need to employ more Mi’kmaw monitors at the collection check points. The Assembly requested signage be posted where Mi’kmaq youth camps are located.
  • Chief Terrance Paul presented a draft letter for Minister Jordan, DFO, to the Assembly. The Chiefs agreed with sending the letter.  Discussion was also had on the Mi’kmaq Surf Clam Company.  The Chiefs requested that a meeting date be booked, outside of an Assembly meeting, to fully discuss the company and its business matters.
  • KMKNO presented the draft Communications Plan for fisheries.
  • An update was provided by KMKNO on financial support from the Federal Government for COVID-19 and how many First Nations businesses and governments do not qualify. Discussion was had on the issue and the Chiefs requested that this be brought to the COVID-19 Finance Committee and a letter be written to the Prime Minister to bring forth the Assembly’s concerns. Chief Gloade informed the Assembly that APC is also sending a similar letter.
  • Chief Andrea Paul provided an update to the Assembly on Boat Harbour consultation and the Environmental Assessment process.
