Assembly Meeting – January 30, 2020

  • Representatives from Burchells, LLP and Ulnooweg Development Group provided an update on the Atlanticann Medical Inc. (AMI) facility, including sales projections, licensing and international sales certifications. Burchells, LLP also discussed the cannabis regime that was developed and was looking for direction on how the Assembly wants to proceed on it. The Chiefs asked that this discussion be brought to the 2020 Nationhood Conference.
  • An update was given on the Mi’kmaq Forestry Initiative and the management plans for Mi’kmaq forestry. Discussion was had on the future of the forestry industry in Nova Scotia and how the Mi’kmaq can have a voice at the table. The Assembly authorized the Forestry Advisory Committee to pursue funding to develop management and business plans for the Mi’kmaq Forestry Projects.
  • An extensive discussion was had on Moderate Livelihood fishing and how we can exercise our right. The Chiefs discussed developing a Terms of Reference for a Mi’kmaq and Industry Fishing Advisory Committee and appointed Chief Terry Paul and Chief Gerald Toney to represent them on this committee.  The Chiefs also discussed the guiding principles that were developed and asked that the guiding principles be brought to the Nationhood Conference for a full discussion, and then have them return to the next Assembly meeting.
  • A presentation was provided to the Assembly by Port Hawkesbury Mayor on the Gateways and Allan J Airport collaboration opportunities.
  • A presentation was provided on the NS Mi’kmaw Health and Wellness Authority. The Chiefs supported the work of the initiative and requested that the community Health Directors be involved.
  • Discussion was had on the Mi’kmaw License Plate fund and how the Assembly wanted to see the dollars administered. The Assembly requested that options be researched and brought to the Assembly’s Finance Committee for their review.  They also requested that Chief Deborah Robinson be part of these discussions as her experience with the J.Strong Foundation would be an asset.
  • The Assembly appointed Chief Rod Googoo as a member of the Finance Committee.
  • The Assembly discussed the request of the Offshore Energy and Research Association to have a representative from the Assembly for their Board of Directors. Further information was requested, which will be provided to the Portfolio Lead.
  • An update was given on the plan to develop a golf course in Halifax County on Crown Land by a private developer.
