Assembly Meeting – December 12, 2019

  • An overview was provided on the Major Resource and Energy Development Fund that was allotted for building capacity in the energy field and used by the Assembly for the Mi’kmaq Wind Companies and Solar projects. The Assembly requested that any remaining funds be provided to Ulnooweg for their administration.
  • Discussion was had on a property obtained by the Assembly from Correctional Services Canada, through the KMKNO Consultation Process. The Chiefs’ agreed to transfer this property to the Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Society at the nominal cost of $1.00. The Friendship Centre will be using this facility to help address Indigenous homelessness in Halifax.
  • An update was provided on the work undertaken by KMKNO to develop a Resource Revenue Sharing Accord on stumpage. The draft agreement between the Assembly and the Province of Nova Scotia was reviewed. The Chiefs directed KMKNO to continue discussions with the Province on this agreement.
  • An invitation was extended from Parks Canada for a flight to Sable Island in February or March for members of the Assembly.
  • An update was provided to the Assembly on the recent meeting that was had with Premier McNeil on cannabis.
