Assembly Meeting – January 28 & February 11, 2021

Meeting Dates:  January 28 & February 11, 2021 via video conferences

  • KMK presented various parcels of land recommended as possible land acquisitions through the Rights Implementation process. The Assembly discussed these lands in depth and also the needs of their communities. No decisions were made, and the Assembly asked for this discussion to be brought back at a future meeting.
  • KMK provided a presentation on the draft Authentic Mi’kmaw Cultural Tourism Guidelines and Spirit of the Mi’kmaq branding and logo. The Assembly approved both items.
  • Burchells LLP updated the Assembly on their research on the fish buying issues and other fisheries-related concerns that the Chiefs had. Burchells and KMK were directed by the Assembly to work on developing a media release.
  • KMK brought back the discussion on a property on Paint Street, Port Hawkesbury. Chief Wilbert Marshall and Chief Annie Bernard-Daisley both expressed interest in their communities cost sharing the operating costs of this property.  The Assembly approved this property being obtained through KMK and transferred to Potlotek and We’koqma’q.
  • KMK provided an update on Netukulimk Livelihood Fisheries and discussed plans for the 2021 season. An update was also provided on DFO’s discussions at the Made-In-Nova Scotia Process Rights Implementation table.  The Assembly agreed that they wanted to discuss this further with their respective Band Councils.  A draft proposal on having a Moderate Livelihood staff member working for each community was also addressed.  The Assembly agreed for this proposal to be brought forward for funding consideration.
  • The Chiefs asked their legal advisors for opinions on the fisheries class action lawsuit.
  • Due to time constraints, the remaining agenda items were rescheduled for February 11th.

February 11, 2021

  • KMK presented a draft MOU on having an 18th century bowl, which was found in Malagawatch and is currently under the care of KMK, transferred to Wagmatcook Heritage Centre and Membertou Cultural Centre. Discussion was had on where the bowl should be permanently housed.  The Unama’ki Chiefs requested to bring the discussion to their next UNSM board meeting, and then back to the Assembly.
  • Chief Norman Bernard stepped down as Lead of the Justice portfolio. The Chiefs booked dates for a strategic planning session so that they could fully review all the portfolios.
  • KMK asked the Assembly for direction on how to move forward with the Assembly’s Benefits Committee. KMK was directed to work with the portfolio Lead, Chief Gloade, directly on this.
  • Regional Chief Prosper provided an update from AFN and his discussions with the Chiefs in Newfoundland.
