Assembly Highlights – June 30, 2022

  • KMK spoke about collaborative work between several Mi’kmaw organizations and community experts with Parks Canada on an arrangement for Rights Implementation that includes Mi’kmaw principles and values, and centres around Netukulimk, Msit No’kmaq, and two-eyed seeing. The work also includes co-management between Mi’kmaw and Parks Canada and the development of a youth forum.
  • On behalf of the Assembly, KMK was looking into a property in Sydney that came forward as surplus through consultation. Cape Breton Regional Municipality (CBRM) has also expressed an interest in the property, and Eskasoni wrote a letter to KMK expressing their support and Membertou’s support for CBRM’s intended use. The Assembly agreed to step back on their pursuit of the property in support of these communities.
  • KMK Consultation Department spoke about the request from the Seawall Trail Society to build a trail from Pleasant Bay to Meat Cove. KMK has been actively consulting on a property they are looking to build through in Cape St. Lawrence.  The Assembly instructed KMK to continue consultation and agreed to allow the Society to proceed with their trail development, while the consultations are ongoing.
  • The Consultation Department also spoke about the proposed disposal of a wharf in Shelburne County. The Assembly requested a site visit before deciding on the wharf.  A request was made for KMK to also look into a wharf that currently is not being used in Cape Breton.
  • On behalf of CMM, KMK was asked to present a land transfer request for Mi’kmawey Debert. The Assembly approved the transfer of lands to the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre’s Society.
  • KMK brought the Indigenous Protected and Conserved Areas (IPCA) Communications Plan back to the Assembly, with the changes the Assembly requested in their previous presentation. The Assembly approved the revised plan.
