The Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs are expressing condolences to the community of Annapolis Valley First Nation on the recent passing of former Chief, Brian Toney.
“It is with heavy hearts and great sadness that we say farewell to a former Chief,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly. “Chief Brian Toney’s friendly nature, passion for Mi’kmaw Treaty Rights, and commitment to his community was appreciated by all who worked with him.”
Chief Toney served as Chief of Annapolis Valley First Nation for 12 years. In 2011, he was a vocal advocate to see the name of the Cornwallis River changed. This advocacy was relatively early in the days of Mi’kmaq and government partners striving to see a more inclusive reflection of the history of Mi’kma’ki being told.
“Chief Toney will be fondly remembered by many, including members of the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs. We offer our deepest sympathy to Chief Toney’s family and many friends on their loss,” said Chief Peters.
