May 7, 2024

On Friday, May 3rd, Chief Annie Bernard-Daisley of We’koqma’q, announced her resignation as Chief of her community.  In turn, this results in her departing the role as Co-Chair for the Assembly of Nova Scotia Mi’kmaw Chiefs (Assembly).

Chief Bernard-Daisley was elected as Co-Chair of the Assembly on October 29, 2020, representing the Unama’ki communities in this role.  She also held the positions of Co-Lead for Assembly portfolios of Justice and Children, Youth, Families and Gender Diversity.

“We thank Chief Annie for her leadership and passion for supporting the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia, particularly in her advocacy for women, children, youth, families and the 2SLGBTQIA+ community,” said Chief Sidney Peters, Co-Chair of the Assembly.

When elected as Chief of We’koqma’q First Nation in 2020, Chief Bernard-Daisley became the first female Chief of her community. Prior to that, she had served as a Councillor in We’koqma’q for three terms, as well as President of the Nova Scotia Native Women’s Association.

“While we are saddened to see Chief Annie leave this role and the Assembly, we truly wish her the very best in her future endeavors,” continued Chief Peters.

Discussions have begun on who will be the new Co-Chair for the Assembly but at the time of this release, no official decision has been made.
