Assembly Highlights – January 2026

  • An update was provided on visits to the three battery storage project sites, managed by WMA. As the sites are still under construction, CIB, WMA and KMK will coordinate site visits for Chiefs and community celebrations for summer 2026. Details will be shared as dates are confirmed.

 

  • KMK provided an update on an article intended to assert the Mi’kmaw position on Treaty Rights, land and resource use, for publication in the Chronicle Herald. The article is in its final draft stages and will be sent to the Chiefs for feedback and approval, prior to submission for publication.

 

  • KMK provided an update on the Inner Bay of Fundy Symposium taking places on February 4. The symposium will bring together community members to discuss and gather feedback on the Bay of Fundy.

 

  • Pam Glode, Mi’kmaw Native Friendship Centre (MNFC), provided a presentation on the Wije’winen Centre, which will become the new home of the of the MNFC. She discussed the success of the Strengthening our Fathers program launched in November 2025. Assembly expressed support for expanding this program into other communities. The Assembly approved a request for a letter of support to help secure funding for the Centre. Chiefs were also invited to tour the program and facilities at the MNFC.

 

  • KMK provided a briefing to the Assembly on a proposed term sheet aimed at securing a new Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) mandate. The term sheet would provide DFO with formal authority to engage in the discussions outlined, addressing previous limitations. A detailed overview of what the term sheet would entail was presented, and the term sheet, position, and budget will be brought back for further discussion at the next Assembly meeting.

 

  • An update was provided to Assembly from the Maw-Kleyu’kik Knijannaq (MKK) team on the progress of Mi’kmaw Customary Code development. Reviews with MFCS group are ongoing and expected to be completed at the end of March. A new definition under “blended families” was discussed and approved. The Chiefs previously requested a comparison between the circulated Code and the current version to identify proposed changes. Meeting dates will be shared to allow for a detailed discussion of the Code.

 

  • AFN Regional Chief Andrea Paul provided an update to Assembly via email.

 

  • Information was provided on an upcoming two-day strategic planning session for Chiefs on Feb 4-5. This session will focus on Culture, Heritage, Archaeology and Tourism (CHAT) and the new 2026 CHAT Strategy.
