KMKNO provided an update on East Coast Energy. The Assembly discussed their environmental concerns with hydraulic fracturing and directed KMKNO to consult with regulators and to look at possible environmental impacts of the test wells.
KMKNO provided an update on consultation on Avon River and current Ministerial orders. KMKNO and the Mi’kmaq Conservation Group are working on this file together. Chief Mike Sack brought forward Sipekne’katik’s concerns with the project and the Assembly invited Sipekne’katik to participate in an upcoming consultation meeting so that all Mi’kmaq concerns could come forward at the same table.
Chief Rod Googoo provided an update from the Task Force on the Commemoration of Edward Cornwallis and the Recognition and Commemoration of Indigenous History. The Report has been completed by the Task Force and provided to the Halifax Regional Municipality Council where all 20 recommendations were accepted.
Tracy Menge was introduced to the Assembly and welcomed as KMKNO’s new Benefits Officer. Tracy will be meeting with proponents in August and will be providing an update to the Assembly on the status of these files at their September meeting.
An update was provided on the plans for Treaty Day 2020 and on the work of Mi’kmaw History Month Advisory Committee.
KMKNO Negotiations Team provided an update on questions asked to Department of Fisheries and Oceans on Moderate Livelihood. The Chiefs requested a meeting date to specifically discuss fish.
Chiefs discussed the need to resume the AFN Regional Chief election process and discussions, as the these were paused due to COVID-19 restrictions with in-person meetings.
