Assembly Highlights – October 24, 2019

  • KMKNO’s Governance Manager updated the Assembly on the Governance and Constitutional development research that is being conducted and provided an overview of the presentation for future engagement sessions. The Assembly approved this work moving forward.
  • Representatives of KMKNO, UINR and CMM provided an update on the joint proposal for Environment Climate Change Canada’s Indigenous, Protected and Conserved Areas (IPAC) Challenge Fund. The joint Mi’kmaq proposal has been accepted, with a reduced budget.  The Assembly approved the new budget and directed the organizations to develop an IPAC Advisory Committee.
  • The Assembly discussed and then approved the creation of a finance committee for their corporate entities.
  • Indigenous Services Canada presented their Strategic Plan for 2019-2024 to the Assembly.
  • Millbrook Cultural & Heritage Centre requested a letter of support for the repatriation of regalia from Australia. The Assembly approved the request and directed KMKNO to draft the letter on their behalf.
  • Natural Forces provided a presentation on the Solar for Community Buildings program.
  • The Assembly received Legal Analysis on the Fisheries Interim Agreement signed by two New Brunswick bands. The Assembly had an in-depth discussion on fisheries.
  • The Assembly requested a congratulatory letter is sent to Jaime Battiste for his recent election as a Member of Parliament.
